A filter press is a widely used industrial machine for solid-liquid separation. It operates on the principle of pressure filtration, where slurry (a mixture of solid and liquid) is pumped into the press and forced through filter cloths under high pressure. The liquid, known as the filtrate, passes through the cloth and exits the system, while the solid particles remain behind, forming what is called a filter cake.
The filter press is made up of a series of filter plates arranged alternately with filter cloths. These plates are clamped together to form a series of chambers. As the slurry is pumped into these chambers, pressure (usually from a hydraulic pump) forces the liquid out through the cloth, while the solids accumulate on the surface of the cloth within the chamber.
